08:52 <KekSi> i think i'm in a situation that's not supposed to happen.. i'm running on 3.2 and the secondary in a replicaset is not reachable
08:52 <KekSi> but it has priority 0 and the primary (priority 1) says its secondary
08:52 <KekSi> o_O
08:53 <KekSi> how do i solve this? usually i'd rs.reconfig(cfg) but its already set up the way its supposed to be
08:58 <KekSi> restarting the secondary did the trick but why would the entire replicaset become unavailable because a prio 0 secondary is offline? and how do i force it back online? i'd still like to know about that (before it comes back to bite me)

11:11 <pawan_tejwani> Hi, can someone please point me to the documentation where I can setup mongodb replication (3.2) where users are authenticated. Sorry little newbie to mongo so need help :)
11:12 <pawan_tejwani> when it's without authentication, it's running fine, just not sure of how to do it for authenticated instances.

11:20 <ArchNoob> In my node.js app, i'm querying a collection with model.find().exec(func() => logic) to get all the data. In the exec block i'm receiving the scope of collection i queried in an array. Question comes, does mongodb load everything I queried in one array? Or does it throw chunks to the callback until it's all done?

18:16 <steffan> KekSi - You have to have a majority of [configured, voting] nodes available to maintain a Primary in the replica set. When you lost a secondary, you didn't have enough nodes (was it a 2-node?) and the Primary stepped down.

21:26 <Aven> Hi :)
21:27 <gitgud> yo
21:27 <Aven> I have a document called employees
21:27 <Aven> ;)
21:27 <gitgud> ikr its so dirty
21:27 <Aven> it gets nasty
21:27 <gitgud> did u mean collection? lol
21:27 <Aven> yes, collection lol
21:27 <gitgud> haha
21:28 <Aven> I want to store some info for the employees week-by-week... is it better to create a separate collection for that?
21:28 <Aven> or since mongodb is not relational, better to just store it all as part of the document?
21:28 <gitgud> is this info have the potential to be infinite?
21:28 <gitgud> yes right?
21:28 <Aven> it'd be an array of data
21:29 <gitgud> since as week goes by you add more and more data yeah?
21:29 <Aven> yeah
21:29 <Aven> yup
21:29 <gitgud> ok if it has potential to be infinite its best to separate collection
21:29 klics joined
21:29 <Aven> ah ok
21:29 <gitgud> but you can do a mix of both
21:29 <Aven> how so
21:29 <gitgud> like have the array on that coll to be upto say 500 objects
21:29 <gitgud> then if it exceeds that, go separate
21:30 <gitgud> but obvs you have to handle this in your application side
21:30 <Aven> ah i see
21:30 <gitgud> basically thats where engineering part comes in :D
21:30 <Aven> also, is it worth getting the mongodb certification?
21:30 <gitgud> ew
21:30 <gitgud> mongodb is so easy :D
21:30 <Aven> worth it as in, for jobs
21:30 <gitgud> its literally a database in json form
21:31 <gitgud> just get the exp
21:31 <Aven> yeah i know
21:31 <Aven> yeah it is easy
21:31 <gitgud> idk these guys might tell you otherwise but they may have other agendas :D
21:31 <gitgud> but i think that would be waste of time
21:31 <Aven> ah
21:32 <Aven> it prolly just looks good for HR
21:32 <gitgud> i doubt it even does that lol
21:32 <gitgud> if you're always returning first 100 objects, then put the first 100 objects in the same object, and then separate the rest
21:33 <gitgud> Aven, the thing is at a point you *have* to separate, because mongodb docs shouldnt exceed 16mb
21:34 itaipu joined
21:34 <gitgud> anyway good luck

21:36 <SlimmyJimmy> Data Directory not found, shutting down....do I have to make that myself?
21:39 <SlimmyJimmy> Come on peeps, you can do this.
21:39 mbwe joined
21:39 <gitgud> haha
21:39 <gitgud> SlimmyJimmy, --dbpath /home/slimjim/mongoData/
21:39 <gitgud> well first mkdir mongoData ofc
21:40 <SlimmyJimmy> I'm on Windows 7, it looks for C:\data\db by default but I never made it.
21:40 <gitgud> ok then go make it then try :D
21:40 <Derick> then you need to make it, or change the dbpath in the config file
21:40 <SlimmyJimmy> ok, thanks.
21:40 <SlimmyJimmy> Im trying to keep it simple, I'll make what it's looking for.
21:42 <SlimmyJimmy> Success
21:43 <Aven> gitgud: why shouldn't they exceed 16mb?
21:45 <gitgud> Aven, eh. because thats how mongo works. mongo needs to pull every doc to memory when it does a call
21:45 <Aven> Now that I think about it, if I store 500 records in a document in an array, that's NINE years.. cause im storing week to week
21:45 <gitgud> every doc that matches your search critary
21:46 <Aven> So I really shouldn't worry about it until 9 years later
21:46 <gitgud> criteria*
21:46 <gitgud> well idk how much these records are
21:46 <Aven> it's tracking an employee's utilization week by week
21:46 <gitgud> if every record is a few bytes then sure. but if every record is big then u might want to lower the 500 number
21:47 <Aven> yeah unless, 100 weeks is plenty
