13:56 <mrgreenfur> I am getting started with Sentinel. The docs say you need 3 nodes, but I’d like to start with just 2, master/slave. Is this a bad idea?

14:39 <badboy_> mrgreenfur: Sentinels are neither master nor slace
14:39 <badboy_> *slave
14:40 al-damiri joined
14:40 <mrgreenfur> “You only need to specify the masters to monitor”
14:40 <badboy_> they monitor a master and its slaves
14:40 <mrgreenfur> ah
14:40 <badboy_> you can have 3 sentinels and one master and one slave
14:41 efphe joined
14:41 <mrgreenfur> becuase sentinel is just the monitoring part right?
14:41 <mrgreenfur> err coordination
14:41 <badboy_> yes
14:42 <mrgreenfur> oh, i see you are suggesting i can still have one master and one slave and just add sentinel to another server
14:42 etehtsea joined
14:43 <mrgreenfur> i’m not so good at redis config, my other machine has redis for a site cache. Will have to setup another redis setup and sentinel on that one to make sure it doesn’t try to monitor the cache instance
14:45 <minus> yes, set up a separate instance if you don't want your existing one in the failover setup
14:46 <minus> if you do want it: use that as master and the other other as slave and it'll just clone the data. be sure that your clients can handle failovers though
14:46 <mrgreenfur> I can do that just by makign a new .conf file and setting it to a different port, right?
14:46 <mstaack> hey everyone

15:23 <mrgreenfur> thank smuch minus
15:25 <mrgreenfur> do most folks use dedicated init.d/redis-server scripts for each instance?
15:27 <minus> i use separate systemd unit files. that's all i can say.
15:27 <mrgreenfur> cool, thanks again

22:18 <farsonic> morning, anyone here done anything with python and redis….
22:18 <farsonic> I’m new to redis too and trying to work out some python integration stuff
22:19 <farsonic> seems there is a few decent libraries for Redis integration, Walrus being one example

23:01 <mrgreenfur> farsonic: what about https://pypi.python.org/pypi/redis
23:01 <farsonic> yep
23:01 <farsonic> so in that example...
23:01 <farsonic> r.set('foo', 'bar')
23:01 <farsonic> is foo the key ?
23:01 <mrgreenfur> yes
23:01 <mrgreenfur> redis packages are pretty lightweight
23:02 <mrgreenfur> they almost always mirror the actual redis commands very closely
23:02 <farsonic> ok….so if I want multiple pieces of information?
23:02 <mrgreenfur> https://redis.io/commands
23:02 <mrgreenfur> check it out
23:02 <farsonic> ‘foo’, ‘bar’,’bing’,bong’
23:02 <mrgreenfur> nope
23:02 <mrgreenfur> you have to serialize /marshal it
23:02 <mrgreenfur> maybe the library does it for you
23:02 <mrgreenfur> try it out
23:02 <farsonic> basically looking to grab MAC addresses from a network and store information against them
23:02 <mrgreenfur> r.set(‘foo’,...)
23:03 <mrgreenfur> there is some support for more complicated types
23:03 <mrgreenfur> but the python library will probably help you serialize it
23:03 <farsonic> yep
23:03 <farsonic> looking into it now
23:07 <farsonic> http://charlesleifer.com/blog/walrus-lightweight-python-utilities-for-working-with-redis/ looks interesting
23:07 <farsonic> might give this a whirl
23:08 wlightning-fuel joined
23:15 <farsonic> if I have 2 or 3 python scripts running can they all read/write to the same redis db
23:15 <farsonic> it is just sitting in memory right?
